The deadline to file taxes was just a few weeks ago, but that hasn't stopped 11th district tax payers from worrying about how to make ends meet.
Our campaign went around the district to hear what tax payers had to say about the economy and how it was affecting them.
Your response? Watch the video below. Groceries, gas and health care are getting more expensive. Layoffs are becoming more common. We need to do something to change the status quo, because it's not working for working families.
Washington needs to act to address these concerns. While the wealthiest one percent of Americans will reap the benefits of George Bush's tax breaks, middle class families will try to stretch their dollars further than ever.
To bring real relief for families who need it most, Debbie is proposing a Middle Class Tax Relief Package. These proposals will bring real relief to taxpayers by lowering their tax burden and putting more money into their pockets.
Debbie's plan for middle class tax relief calls for:
- Allowing homeowners who do not itemize their tax returns to deduct their property taxes from their federal income taxes. The measure would benefit an estimated 40% of homeowners.
- Doubling the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (DCTC) for middle class families that make up to $100,000.
- Making permanent marriage penalty relief that equalizes the standard deduction for married couples and singles and extends the 15% bracket for married couples to ensure that our tax code doesn’t penalize marriage.
- Making permanent the per-child tax credit level at $1,000.
- Permanently fixing the Alternative Minimum Tax to extend tax relief to more than 23 million middle class families across America.
